Mounjaro is a branded name for the weight-loss medication tirzepatide. It is a GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, meaning that it mimics the effects of GIP and GLP-1 which are hormones that regulate how full we feel. Additionally, Mounjaro slows the rate at which food is processed in the stomach, known as gastric emptying. This helps in its effect of making a person feel fuller for longer.

Mounjaro has been approved for weight loss in the UK by the MHRA since November 2023. The MHRA ensures that medicines work and are safe before they can be prescribed in the UK.

Mounjaro is intended to be taken as a long-term weight-loss medication, so results are seen over long periods of time as opposed to instantaneous weight loss. Generally, you will start to see weight-loss results from Mounjaro after 4 weeks of treatment, with sustained results over the following months.

Mounjaro is suitable for people with a BMI over 30, as well as those with a BMI over 27 who also have weight-related health conditions such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems. Non-oral contraception (e.g. condoms or the coil) should be used when taking Mounjaro. You should not use Mounjaro if you are pregnant and should stop treatment at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant while taking Mounjaro, stop using it immediately and consult with your GP or midwife. Mounjaro is not suitable for those under the age of 18, those who have severe kidney or digestive problems, anyone with a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer, or people with diabetic eye disease.
